Don't Buy One -- Rent One -- Forklift Rental Can Save You A Bundle

Forklift Rental

Purchasing a forklift -- even a used one -- can cost you a pretty penny. If you only need to use a forklift occasionally, forklift rental instead of purchase can be a good option for you. As well, the smaller business operating on a larger budget, may find that forklift rental is their only real option. But there are some things to keep in mind as you consider forklift rental rather than an outright purchase --

One thing you need to take a look at is your existing staff. Do any of your employees currently know how to properly operate a forklift? If not, your going to need to secure some training for them -- the government requires all forklift operators to be employer-certified before they can operate these units -- that's the law. A properly trained forklift operator -- even if they are using a rented forklift -- is far less likely to injure themselves or others, or damage the forklift.

When choosing a forklift for rental, you need to give some serious consideration to the environment in which it will be used. For example, will you be using your rented forklift inside or outside? Inside, the floor will most likely be smooth and level most of the time -- outside you will need a forklift rental unit that is capable of handling uneven surfaces, one that can be negotiated around obstacles.

Another thing you will need to take into consideration is your forklift rental units' reach height -- just how high will you need to be storing things? If you have a warehouse with items stored high above the ground, you will need a different type of forklift rental unit than a store which needs a unit only to lift items a few feet onto a loading platform. In some cases, your forklift rental unit may need to be operated in an area with a very low ceiling overhead.

Another consideration is whether you will be operating your forklift rental unit in a hazardous environment. For example, if you will be operating your forklift in an indoor area that is small and unventilated, then you will not be able to use a unit which is powered by a combustion engine -- simply because the engine exhaust fumes will build up.

Of course, a key characteristic of your forklift is its carrying capacity. You need to make sure that your chosen a forklift rental unit is able to carry the size and weight of necessary loads in your business environment. If necessary, your forklift rental unit may need to be equipped with special features in order to carry oversized or shifting loads.

Finally, keep in mind that certain types of forklift rental units are more appropriate in certain kinds of businesses/environments than others. For example, for businesses that operate largely outside, in rough terrain, a construction forklift is the common choice. On the other hand, if you need to use your forklift in an indoor distribution center or manufacturing facility, your best forklift rental unit may be the industrial or reach-type.
